About Startpage
Startpage is a Dutch search engine, operated from the Netherlands since 2006 by Surfboard Holding B.V. Its core idea is simple: deliver Google's search results without Google's tracking. Queries are stripped of identifying information before being forwarded, so Google sees only an anonymous request from Startpage's servers.
The service stores no IP addresses, sets no tracking cookies and offers an "Anonymous View" proxy that lets users open results without the destination site learning who they are. Revenue comes from non-personalized contextual ads tied to the current query alone.
In 2019 the US ad-tech company System1 acquired a majority stake, which prompted scrutiny in the privacy community; Startpage maintains that its no-logging policy is unchanged and that privacy guarantees are contractually anchored. The company remains based in the Netherlands and subject to EU privacy law.
