About DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is a US search engine founded in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg with the founding promise of not tracking its users. Searches are not logged to user profiles, results are not personalized, and the company makes money from contextual ads based solely on the current search term.
Results are drawn from its own crawler plus hundreds of sources, most prominently Bing. Beyond search, DuckDuckGo has grown into a small privacy suite: browsers for desktop and mobile, tracker blocking, and email protection that strips trackers from forwarded mail.
DuckDuckGo handles billions of searches per year, making it one of the largest independent search providers. It remains a private, founder-led company in Pennsylvania — US jurisdiction being the main caveat privacy-conscious users raise — and is frequently recommended as the lowest-friction first step away from big-tech defaults.
